Floor Covering Two: Whether you plan to lay a new Floor covering two covering or to make a decorative feature of an exposed Floor covering two, careful repair and preparation are vital. The Floor covering two should be as level as possible, clean, dry, and smooth. Smoothness is important, since any projections will quickly ruin a covering.
Carpet is perhaps the most common Floor covering two covering in homes. It comfortable to walk over and sit on, and can transform any inte instantly. Made from wool or synthetic fibers, or a mixture of th two, carpet is available in a vast range of thicknesses, patterns, colors, textures, and cost. Its durability as a Floor covering two covering depe on quality and the wear it is subjected to.See Also Ceramic Fuel:Ceramic fuel elements are of increasing im¬portance in the generation of nuclear power. Ap¬proximately 90% of newly planned nuclear elec¬tric power installations will contain enriched uranium dioxide (UO»), a ceramic material, as the fuel element. Many of the structural elements of the reactors, from the construction materials to the control rods (which are usually boron com¬pounds or rare-earth oxides), are also ceramic materials.
Ceramic materials are being used in personnel mor to defeat the penetration of bullets. Alumi-jm oxide compounds are the most widely used ir this purpose. Such ceramic materials are also ;ing used as armor in helicopters and other air-
•aft.
On The Other Hand See Ceramic Materials:The impetus for the many current develop¬ments in ceramics has arisen from the critical demands of many industries for improved ma¬terials. Particularly stringent requirements have come from the aerospace industry, where weight-strength ratios, and thermal shock, dielectric, abrasive, and refractory properties are critical. The applications of ceramic materials in the aero¬space industry include the use of alumina ceram¬ics for missile and rocket nose cones. Silicon carbide or molybdenum disilicide are used in rocket nozzles, ceramic coatings are used on metal parts of rockets and satellites, and ceramic materials are used for thermal Insulation in the spacecraft.
Nature of Ceramic Materials. Ceramics are in¬organic, nonmetallic materials that have been subjected to heat treatment. They are generally hard brittle materials that withstand compression very well but do not hold up well under tension compared to the metals. They are abrasive-re¬sistant, heat resistant (refractory), and can sus¬tain large compressive loads even at high tem¬peratures. Many ceramics are chemically inert even at high temperatures, as is shown by their good oxidation and reduction resistance at these temperatures. The nature of the chemical bond in ceramics is generally ionic in character, and the anions play an important role in the deter¬mination of the properties of the material. Typ¬ical anions that are important constituents of ceramic materials are carbides, borides, nitrides, and oxides.
